De-shedding
Double-coated dogs and cats shed their undercoat in clumps twice a year, and that matted undercoat traps heat and irritates the skin. De-shedding extracts it with specific tools, without cutting the topcoat, which is what protects them from sun and cold.

Is it the same as shaving?
No, and that matters. De-shedding pulls out the dead undercoat and leaves the topcoat intact. Shaving a double coat removes the protection against sun and heat, and sometimes the hair doesn't grow back the same.
How often is it done?
Twice a year, in line with the moults, plus a top-up in between for very dense breeds. Outside the moult, normal brushing.
Does it suit any dog?
Only double-coated ones: German shepherd, husky, akita, border collie and the like. On a single-coated dog there's no undercoat to pull out and the tool only irritates the skin.
