In continuously growing coats, every six to eight weeks. Stretching it much further usually ends in knots that force a shorter cut than you wanted.
Can I ask for a particular cut?
Yes, and bringing a photo helps. What isn't always possible is copying it: the result depends on the hair type and the state it arrives in. A good professional tells you what can be done today and what needs growing out first.
Can they be clipped in summer so they feel less heat?
On a single coat, yes. On a double coat, no: the coat also insulates against heat, and shaving it leaves the skin exposed to the sun. What cools there is de-shedding, not the clippers.
