Separation anxiety support

Separation anxiety doesn't get fixed by ignoring it or by tiring the dog out before you go. The work is about rebuilding absences from seconds to hours, with a plan adjusted to what they can take each day. It's one of the slowest processes, and one of the ones that changes living together most.

Frequently asked questions

Won't it pass with time?

On its own, almost never. What usually happens is that it settles at a level of suffering the household ends up tolerating: crying at first and the occasional bit of damage. Noticing it less doesn't mean they're better.

Does another animal in the house help?

Sometimes, and sometimes it changes nothing: if the bond is with you, another animal's company doesn't cover that absence. Bringing in a second animal to solve it can end in two problems instead of one.

How do I know if it's anxiety or boredom?

By filming them. Boredom shows up after a while and comes and goes; anxiety starts in the first few minutes and doesn't let up: panting, drooling, attempts to escape through the door. Half an hour of video almost always settles it.
