Advanced obedience starts where basic obedience ends: holding what's been learned at a distance, with noise around and for longer. It's fine work, short sessions and many repetitions, and it shows most out in the street. It assumes the basic cues are already there.

What's needed before starting?
That the basic cues work at home and on a quiet street. If your dog still doesn't sit with distractions around, the work you need is basic obedience.
Is it useful for competing?
It's the foundation. For competition there are disciplines with their own precision criteria, and whoever trains you should know them if that's your goal. Say so from the first session.
How long before results show?
Weeks, not days, and it depends above all on how much you practise between sessions. Ten minutes a day at home pays off far more than an hour on Saturdays.
