Basic obedience

Basic obedience isn't about tricks, it's about being able to go out calmly. You work four or five useful cues until they genuinely hold, and you're taught how to keep them at home, which is where they stick. It works at any age, not only in puppies.

Frequently asked questions

From what age?

From puppyhood, with very short sessions. And at any age after that: the idea that an adult dog no longer learns is false, they just need more repetitions to undo habits.

Do I have to be at the sessions?

Yes. If the dog learns with someone else and you don't, it doesn't work at home. A good part of the session is teaching you how to ask for it and how to reinforce it. Odd as it sounds, the training is as much for the owner as for the animal.

How many sessions for the basic cues?

Between four and eight to have the basic cues working, with daily practice at home in between. Without that practice, the number goes up and the result doesn't arrive.
